  • Chico & Nunes, P.C. is pleased to introduce Robert Markin and Tina Tiliks

    Chico & Nunes, P.C. is pleased to welcome Robert S. Markin and Tina Y. Tiliks, who joined our team of attorneys in September, 2008. Mr. Markin joined our firm as a Partner and Ms. Tiliks joined our firm as a Senior Attorney.

    Mr. Markin will concentrate his practice on litigation, regulatory disputes, and government affairs. Mr. Markin has previously represented large utilities, major accounting firms, market leaders in the airline, transportation, healthcare, educational services and manufacturing industries, a wide array of developers and architectural, engineering and consulting firms, and several government bodies. Immediately prior to joining Chico & Nunes, P.C., Mr. Markin was a Partner at DLA Piper. Mr. Markin has also served as General Counsel and Chief of Staff for the Chicago Board of Education.

    Ms. Tiliks will be working in the firm's Real Estate Group. Prior to joining Chico & Nunes, P.C., Ms. Tiliks worked for the City of Chicago Law Department as an Assistant Corporation Counsel in the Municipal Prosecutions Division, and most recently in the Labor Division. Ms. Tiliks represented the City in quasi-criminal and civil matters related to the Municipal and Building Codes of the City of Chicago and in disciplinary proceedings before the Police and Personnel Boards, as well as agencies such as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the Illinois Department of Human Rights.

  • Jerry Brown to speak at the CBA Energy Committee meeting on 10/6/08

    On Monday, October 6 at 12:15 pm, Chico & Nunes, P.C. attorney Jerry Brown will be giving a presentation on electronic discovery and metadata at the CBA Energy Committee meeting at the CBA Headquarters, 321 S. Plymouth Court.

    The presentation is titled ELECTRONIC DISCOVERY AND METADATA: PITFALLS AND DANGERS FOR THE UNWARY IN THE DIGITAL AGE, and will examine issues and recent legal developments governing the retention, destruction and discovery of electronic data. The discussion will address data preservation obligations, challenges in managing electronic data and issues to consider in crafting an effective electronic data management strategy.

    Chico & Nunes, P.C. is pleased to introduce Richard M. Carbonara and Allison M. Benway, two recent additions to our team of attorneys. Mr. Carbonara joined our firm as a Partner and Ms. Benway joined our firm as an Associate, both in July, 2008.

    Mr. Carbonara is focusing his practice in corporate and commercial law in a wide variety of discrete areas, including construction and real estate development; environmental law; product liability; internal corporate security and investigations; and governmental relations and representation, with substantial experience in complex commercial litigation. Mr. Carbonara entered the private practice of law with one of our nation's premier trial attorneys, Leonard M. Ring, in a plaintiff oriented practice. He went on to practice for a number of years at the international law firm of Altheimer & Gray, and was a Partner there until 2003. Thereafter, Mr. Carbonara was a named Partner and principal at two small commercial law firms in Chicago, prior to joining Chico & Nunes as a Partner in 2008.

    Ms. Benway concentrates her practice primarily in the area of zoning and land use. Previously, she served as Legal Counsel to Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich from 2005 through 2008. In that position, Ms. Benway served as the Governor's Office Freedom of Information Act Officer and counseled the Governor on executive clemency petitions, state constitutional matters, and audit issues.
  • Juhl Wind Appoints Chico & Nunes Attorney to the Company's Board

    Juhl Wind Inc. announced today that at a recent meeting of its board, the company appointed Edward Hurley as a director. The appointment is effective immediately. "We are extremely honored to add Ed to our board," stated Dan Juhl, CEO of Juhl Wind Inc. "Ed's experience and reputation in the energy industry will directly enhance our development activity with electric transmission operators and electric utilities throughout the U.S. As chairman of the Illinois Commerce Commission, Ed oversaw the regulatory initiatives of the fifth largest state in the country as he dealt with every aspect of utility deregulation and the growth of renewable energy including wind."

  • Chico & Nunes, P.C. attorney announces bid for Illinois State Representative

    Michael J. Zalewski, an associate attorney at Chico & Nunes, P.C. announced that he is running for political office. Mr. Zalewski was chosen by the Democratic Committeemen of the 21st Representative District to replace Representative Robert Molaro, who is pursuing other interests, as the candidate to run for the 21st Representative District in the Illinois General Assembly. The election will take place in November, 2008. Chico & Nunes wishes Mr. Zalewski the best while he takes a leave of absence from the firm to run as a full time candidate.

  • Chico and Nunes helps with TIF Grant for Mobile Home project

    With the help of Chico and Nunes, a mobile-home park on Chicago's Southeast side is getting a $257 million makeover. On June 10, 2008, the Chicago Development Commission voted unanimously to approve the Tax-Increment Financing (TIF) grant. A City panel signed off on a $26.5 million subsidy to help finance a 953 unit residential development, which is replacing the last mobile home park in Chicago.

    On Monday, May 19, Ed Hurley will be one of the featured speakers at the Chicago Bar Association Energy and Communications Law Committee. The meeting will be at 12:15 PM at the Chicago Bar Association offices, 321 S. Plymouth. The topic will be "The Electric and Gas Industries: What Can Be Learned From the Telecommunications Experience?"

  • Ed Hurley participates in Ethics and Energy conference

    Ed Hurley participated in "Commitment to Ethics for Practitioners of Energy and Public Utility Law," a conference presented by the ISBA Energy, Utilities, Telecommunications and Transportation Section, co-sponsored by the Midwest chapter of the Energy Bar Association and the Energy and Communications Law Committee of the Chicago Bar Association.
  • Chico and Nunes, P.C. hosts event honoring Dr. Blondean Y. Davis

    Dr. Blondean Y. Davis, Superintendent of client Matteson School District No. 162, was recently selected as the 2008 Illinois Superintendent of the Year. Chico & Nunes, P.C. hosted a celebration of Dr. Davis' achievement. Illinois Senate President Emil Jones attended to salute Dr. Davis' success in leading District 162 to realize sustained, continuous gains in performance by District 162 students on the Illinois Student Achievement Tests during each of the five years since Dr. Davis became Superintendent. Gery J. Chico represented Governor Rod Blagojevich in presenting Dr. Davis with a proclamation recognizing Dr. Davis' election as the 2008 Superintendent of the Year by educators throughout the State of Illinois.

    Chico & Nunes, P.C. is pleased to introduce Elaine Williams and Caroline Nash, two recent additions to our team of attorneys. Ms. Williams joined us in September, 2007 and Ms. Nash in November, 2007.

    Ms. Williams is focusing her practice in the transactional area, with a particular emphasis on financial matters. Ms. Williams enriches our firm with the substantial experience that she brings in negotiating and managing contracts and financial transactions related to educational technology services, in her previous leadership roles at JDL Technologies and the Chicago Public Schools.

    Ms. Nash brings an impressive background of project experience to Chico & Nunes, including the oversight of significant development initiatives downtown and along Chicago's south lakefront. Ms. Nash is focusing her practice in the areas of land use, real estate development and municipal law.
