Jerry Brown Appointed to the Illinois ARDC Board of Review

On February 25, 2010, Chico & Nunes, P.C. Attorney Jerry D. Brown was appointed to the Illinois ARDC Board of Review. The Board hears attorney disciplinary cases.
On February 17, 2010, Jerry Brown presented a seminar to the Cook County Bar Association titled ?Injunctions, TROs and Declaratory Judgments?. The seminar discussed injunctions, temporary restraining order and declaratory judgments, focusing on the statutory bases for relief, the elements to be proved, defenses, notices and bond requirements, tactical considerations that apply to each remedy, and enforcement of orders.

Ted Eidukas becomes adjunct faculty at The John Marshall Law School

Chico & Nunes, P.C. staff members participate in 16th annual Race Judicata

On Thursday, July 30, Chico & Nunes attorneys and staff participated in the 16th Annual Race Judicata. The 5K walk/run was hosted by Chicago Volunteer Legal Services (CVLS), a charitable organization, and its many supporters and sponsors. All of the proceeds from the event went to CVLS, whose mission is to provide equal access to justice for all.
There were 3700 plus participants in the Race Judicata, and much spirit and comradely amongst the legal professionals who were there. Chico & Nunes would like to congratulate the participants from the firm, who did an outstanding job.

Team from Chico & Nunes, P.C. participates in 2009 Chase Corporate Challenge

On Thursday, May 21, 12 runners from Chico & Nunes, P.C. were supported by co-workers, friends and family as the team ran in this year's Chase Corporate Challenge, held in Grant Park. A total of over 17,000 runners from various companies participated in the event, which raised funds and groceries for the Greater Chicago Food Depository. Click to see a photo!

C&N provides counsel for new Chicago Mathematics and Science Academy building

With the help of Chico & Nunes real estate, land use and financing attorneys, The Chicago Mathematics and Science Academy will be moving into a new school building this fall. Chico & Nunes represented the successful charter school in its $5.5 Million acquisition of a site in Rogers Park and obtained rezoning and entitlements for the facility. Chico & Nunes also represented CMSA on the financing agreements for the $11 Million project. Delaware Place Bank and IFF provided a construction and first mortgage loan. IFF also made a second mortgage loan, a secured loan for furniture, fixtures and equipment and provided credit enhancement for CMSA.

Ed Hurley and Jerry Brown to Moderate Panels at 2009 NCRA Conference

Chico & Nunes, P.C. attorneys Ed Hurley and Jerry Brown will moderate panels at the 32nd Annual National Conference of Regulatory Attorneys (NCRA), sponsored by the National Association of Regulatory Utilities Commissioners [NARUC] Subcommittee on Law. The conference will take place from May 31 - June 3, 2009, in Las Vegas, NV. The conference is intended to provide topical educational opportunities for regulatory attorneys to prepare them to assist their regulatory agencies in carrying out the legal responsibilities of the agencies.
Ed Hurley will moderate Session XIII: Renewables and Efficiencies: Cost and Benefits. -Just how viable are renewables given the decline in demand for energy and the uncertainty of governmental subsidies? Exploring the environmental, as well as the financial, impacts of bringing wind and solar power online. What are the current policies and economics on climate change and clean coal technologies? We also look to California's experience with the Cap and Trade model.

Since April, 2009, Chico & Nunes Partner Rick Carbonara has been a Guest Lecturer on the topic of Complex Commercial Litigation in the MBA program at Northern Illinois University. Mr. Carbonara is lecturing at the request of a Cook County Circuit Court Judge, who is an instructor in that program.

Chico & Nunes is pleased to announce that Lawrence Adelson has become Of Counsel to the firm. Mr. Adelson brings expertise in restructuring and real estate to the law firm.
Mr. Adelson has been Chief Executive Officer of CMC Heartland Partners, a publicly listed real estate partnership. He was also Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Heartland Technology, an AMEX-listed electronics manufacturing company, and VP-General Counsel of Chicago Milwaukee Corporation, a NYSE-listed investment company. Mr. Adelson has experience in a wide range of industries, from commercial timberlands and real estate to railroads and high tech manufacturing. While at CMC Heartland Partners Mr. Adelson redeveloped rail yards into significant projects in Chicago, Illinois, including Kinzie Station, a 2,000 unit, master-planned mixed-use community in the West Loop; and Goose Island Business Park, a 25-acre commercial joint venture.
Mr. Adelson is a graduate of the University of Michigan and Harvard Law School where he was an Editor of the Harvard Law Review.

R.M. Chin's Renaissance Village named "Project of the Year"

The Eighteenth Street Development Corporation named R.M. Chin's Renaissance Village "Project of the Year". R.M. Chin plans to develop a 5.5 acre site with residential units and neighborhood retail in the City's Pilsen community. The site has been vacant for over 20 years and the neighborhood has not seen any new development in several years. The development will include up to 437 residential units, approximately 40,000 square feet of retail space including a variety of small neighborhood restaurants and a small park on the north of the property.

Chico & Nunes, P.C. is pleased to welcome Robert S. Markin and Tina Y. Tiliks, who joined our team of attorneys in September, 2008. Mr. Markin joined our firm as a Partner and Ms. Tiliks joined our firm as a Senior Attorney.
Mr. Markin will concentrate his practice on litigation, regulatory disputes, and government affairs. Mr. Markin has previously represented large utilities, major accounting firms, market leaders in the airline, transportation, healthcare, educational services and manufacturing industries, a wide array of developers and architectural, engineering and consulting firms, and several government bodies. Immediately prior to joining Chico & Nunes, P.C., Mr. Markin was a Partner at DLA Piper. Mr. Markin has also served as General Counsel and Chief of Staff for the Chicago Board of Education.
Ms. Tiliks will be working in the firm's Real Estate Group. Prior to joining Chico & Nunes, P.C., Ms. Tiliks worked for the City of Chicago Law Department as an Assistant Corporation Counsel in the Municipal Prosecutions Division, and most recently in the Labor Division. Ms. Tiliks represented the City in quasi-criminal and civil matters related to the Municipal and Building Codes of the City of Chicago and in disciplinary proceedings before the Police and Personnel Boards, as well as agencies such as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the Illinois Department of Human Rights.

Jerry Brown to speak at the CBA Energy Committee meeting on 10/6/08

On Monday, October 6 at 12:15 pm, Chico & Nunes, P.C. attorney Jerry Brown will be giving a presentation on electronic discovery and metadata at the CBA Energy Committee meeting at the CBA Headquarters, 321 S. Plymouth Court.
The presentation is titled ELECTRONIC DISCOVERY AND METADATA: PITFALLS AND DANGERS FOR THE UNWARY IN THE DIGITAL AGE, and will examine issues and recent legal developments governing the retention, destruction and discovery of electronic data. The discussion will address data preservation obligations, challenges in managing electronic data and issues to consider in crafting an effective electronic data management strategy.

Chico & Nunes, P.C. is pleased to introduce Richard M. Carbonara and Allison M. Benway, two recent additions to our team of attorneys. Mr. Carbonara joined our firm as a Partner and Ms. Benway joined our firm as an Associate, both in July, 2008.
Mr. Carbonara is focusing his practice in corporate and commercial law in a wide variety of discrete areas, including construction and real estate development; environmental law; product liability; internal corporate security and investigations; and governmental relations and representation, with substantial experience in complex commercial litigation. Mr. Carbonara entered the private practice of law with one of our nation's premier trial attorneys, Leonard M. Ring, in a plaintiff oriented practice. He went on to practice for a number of years at the international law firm of Altheimer & Gray, and was a Partner there until 2003. Thereafter, Mr. Carbonara was a named Partner and principal at two small commercial law firms in Chicago, prior to joining Chico & Nunes as a Partner in 2008.
Ms. Benway concentrates her practice primarily in the area of zoning and land use. Previously, she served as Legal Counsel to Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich from 2005 through 2008. In that position, Ms. Benway served as the Governor's Office Freedom of Information Act Officer and counseled the Governor on executive clemency petitions, state constitutional matters, and audit issues.

Juhl Wind Inc. announced today that at a recent meeting of its board, the company appointed Edward Hurley as a director. The appointment is effective immediately. "We are extremely honored to add Ed to our board," stated Dan Juhl, CEO of Juhl Wind Inc. "Ed's experience and reputation in the energy industry will directly enhance our development activity with electric transmission operators and electric utilities throughout the U.S. As chairman of the Illinois Commerce Commission, Ed oversaw the regulatory initiatives of the fifth largest state in the country as he dealt with every aspect of utility deregulation and the growth of renewable energy including wind."
